The minimum current taken by a motor or transformer when there is no load connected externally is called no-load current. It is principally magnetizing current and loss components of typically 20-40 percent of rated small induction motors and 1-5 percent of transformers. It can be computed based on measured no-load power and voltage or based on the manufacturer's data.

For induction motors, no-load current is mainly the magnetizing current plus small losses (iron and windage). For transformers, it is the current required to establish the magnetic flux in the core plus iron-loss component. For a given rated voltage (V), no-load power factor (PF₀), and no-load input power (P₀), the current is: I₀ = P₀ / (√3 · VLL · PF₀) for 3-phase, or I₀ = P₀ / (V · PF₀) for single-phase. Alternatively, if you know the no-load current percentage from datasheet, use: I₀ = Irated × (%I₀/100). This helps in sizing fuses, estimating idle losses, and checking motor/transformer health.
