Differential switch wiring diagram
Learn how to control two lights from three places using ladder wiring with two-way and four-way switches for safe and efficient operation.
two lights with four-way switch
A two-way switch may be used at both ends of each light, and one four-way switch in the middle to control the lights in three locations. The line reaches the first switch, then the travelers pass through the four-way switch and the second switch then joined to the lamp, and the Neutral is directly connected to the lights.
hall two light three switch control
A ladder wiring diagram shows how to connect switches and lights in a step-by-step manner like rungs of a ladder. To control two lights from three places, we need two two-way switches and one four-way switch per circuit.
For each light:
- The Line (Phase) is connected to the COM terminal of the first two-way switch.
- Two traveler wires link the first two-way switch to the four-way switch.
- Another two traveler wires connect the four-way switch to the second two-way switch.
- The COM of the second two-way switch goes to the light (Load).
- The Neutral wire connects directly to the light.
By repeating the same circuit for both lights (or using double-pole switches), you can control Light1 and Light2 from three different switch locations. This setup is commonly used in staircases, corridors, and large rooms.
Work / Installation (Inputs → Outputs)
- Input: Line → Switch1 (COM)
- Travelers: Switch1 (L1/L2) → Four-way Switch → Switch2 (L1/L2)
- Output: Switch2 (COM) → Lamp → Neutral
Repeat this for both lamps (Light1 & Light2).
Testing and Final Adjustments
Wire and then turn ON the MCB and test the two lights. Toggle any of the three switches (Switch1, Four-way, or Switch2) - the light to which one is connected should go ON/OFF. Test both lights separately. When a light has only one working position, the traveler connections may have been switched. Always be sure that Neutral is straight to the lights, and that only the Line is turned off. Colour coded to facilitate troubleshooting: Line red/brown, Neutral black/blue, and Earth green/yellow. Clamp screw ends and wrap up open copper wires with tape. Mark switches to prevent confusion when both lights are operated adjacent to each other.
