how to wire a motion sensor light

A security light wiring diagram shows you how to set up a PIR motion sensor and a light to work automatically. This circuit is mostly utilized in home doors, gardens, staircases, garages, and offices to save power and protect against burglars. The output of the supply ends at a phase (line) which is terminated at the input of the motion sensor. Sensor output is attached to the security light phase input. The supply neutral is wired directly to the light and (where necessary) the motion sensor. The sensor starts the light when there is some movement in it. After no movement is detected, a preset delay is given and the light goes off. When installed properly, it is safe and convenient and uses less energy.

Work / Installation (Inputs → Outputs)

The working principle of a motion sensor light is simple:

  • Input: Line (phase) and neutral supply.
  • Output: Security light connected through the PIR sensor.

Installation steps:

  • Connect the phase (line) wire from the supply to the sensor’s input terminal (L).
  • Connect the sensor’s output terminal to the phase terminal of the security light.
  • Connect the neutral (N) wire from the supply directly to both the sensor and the light.
  • Connect the earth/ground wire to the light’s body for safety.
  • Adjust sensor settings (sensitivity, delay time, and lux level).

When motion is detected within the sensor’s range, it provides output to the light, switching it ON. After no motion is detected, the light automatically turns OFF.

Testing and Final Adjustments

Once wiring has been completed, switch the supply off and reinspect all connections. Ensure that the line is connected to the sensor input, the sensor output to the light, and the neutral is also connected. When it is confirmed, switch ON the power supply. By placing it in front of the motion sensor, test the setup. The security light must be ON immediately. You can use the delay timer to adjust the duration of the light on when you are no longer moving. Tune the sensitivity knob to the distance to be detected and the lux setting to determine whether the light would work in the day or only at night. Make sure that wires are covered and clamped. Test again, at varying times (day/night) and angles to ensure it is working correctly.
