Motion Sensor Wiring
Learn motion sensor with two-way switch wiring diagram, step-by-step installation, working, and testing guide for flexible control of lights in the home and office.

motion sensor two way switch connection
Two-way switch wiring. A motion sensor can be used with a light to control it manually or automatically. The PIR sensor and switch are connected in parallel, hence any of them can switch ON the light.
motion sensor with two way switch wiring
Two-way switch wiring (two-wire). A motion sensor is a system that combines manual and automatic control of a light or load. This arrangement comes in handy in staircases, corridors, bedrooms, or offices where you prefer to have the ability to switch lights ON/OFF both manually and automatically using a PIR motion sensor. A two-way switch and a PIR motion sensor are also wired together in parallel in this wiring. The phase (line) wire is attached to the common terminal on the switch and sensor input. The phase of the load is fed with the outputs of the switch and the sensor. Both the sensor and the load are directly connected to the neutral wire. In this manner, when the switch is ON, the light can be operated manually; when the switch is OFF, the light is operated by the PIR sensor.
Work / Installation (Inputs → Outputs)
- Input: Phase (line) from supply connected to switch and PIR sensor.
- Output: Light connected to both outputs of the switch and sensor.
- Neutral: Connected directly to both sensor and light.
steps:
- Connect the phase (line) wire to the common terminal of the two way switch and to the sensor input (L).
- Connect the output terminal of the switch and the sensor output together, then to the phase terminal of the load.
- Connect neutral from the supply to both the sensor and the load.
- Connect the ground (earth) wire to the load body for safety.
Now the light can be controlled automatically (via motion sensor) or manually (via two way switch).
Testing and Final Adjustments
Once wired, ensure that all the connections are insulated and tight. Turn on and test the switch: when the switch is turned ON, the light must be on, no matter what the sensor status is. The motion sensor should be the only way that the light will be ON when the switch is OFF. Tune the PIR sensor on the sensitivity and time delay, and the lux level. On corridors or staircases, delay time should be increased; in bedrooms, sensitivity should be reduced. Re-test at other times (day/night) to confirm that it is working. Lastly, cover junction boxes with close lids, screws, and insulation tapes.
Frequently Asked Questions - Motion Sensor Wiring:
What is motion sensor with two way switch wiring?
It is a connection that allows both manual and automatic control of a light.
Why use a two way switch with a motion sensor?
It gives the option of manual ON/OFF control along with automatic operation.
Where is this wiring commonly used?
In staircases, corridors, garages, bedrooms, and office areas.
How is the switch connected?
The line wire connects to the common terminal of the switch and joins the sensor input.
How is the light connected?
The outputs of both the switch and the motion sensor are connected to the phase of the light.
Does the neutral wire connect to the sensor?
Yes, neutral connects to both the sensor and the load directly.
Can the sensor be bypassed with the switch?
Yes, if the switch is ON, the light works manually regardless of the sensor.
Is earthing required in this wiring?
Yes, the earth wire should be connected to the light body for safety.
Can LED lights be used with this wiring?
Yes, motion sensor with two way switch wiring supports LED lights.
Is this method safe for home use?
Yes, if installed with proper insulation and correct wiring practices.
